The Youth Scholarship is sponsored by the New York
Farm Bureau Promotion & Education Committee. Criteria for selection
include:
• Student must be a high school junior at the time
of application deadline.
• Candidate must live or work on a farm or be
involved with agriculture
• Farm Bureau membership is not required.
Students are required to submit an application and
an essay about how agriculture affects their life now and in the future.
A committee in each district selects one student to compete on a
statewide basis for the top three scholarship awards. Each district
winner will attend New York Farm Bureau’s “Think Spring” conference on
April 2 where the final selections will be made. Judging is based on
the application, personal interview, and an oral presentation. The
first place prize is $1,000, second place wins $500, and third place is
worth $250.
Sarah Robinson wins Farm Bureaus Chenango County
and NYFB District 5 (Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, and Onondaga)
-Youth Scholarship. Sarah is a senior at Otselic Valley Central School
and is a member of the band, marching band, chorus, envirothon team, ski
club, and biology club.
On the farm she is in charge of raising the
heifers. According to Sarah, she is happiest when she is in the barn
with her cows, calves, and kittens.
Sarah has been a member of FFA for five years and
involved in 4-H since the age of eight. She is currently the Chenango
County Alternate Dairy Princess. She enjoys showing cattle at the
Chenango County Fair.
Sarah hopes to attend SUNY Cobleskill to study
agriculture. Her goal is to take over the family’s certified organic
dairy farm and continue the breeding and sale of Brown Swiss animals.
Should Sarah be unable to compete on the state level, Michelle Meisner
of Broome County is the alternate.
